Middle East Technical University (METU) employees are covered by applicable Turkish legislation governing paternity leave, according to their employment status. Under Article 104(B) of Civil Servants Law No. 657, civil servants are entitled to ten days of paternity leave upon request when their spouse gives birth. Under Additional Article 2 of Labour Law No. 4857, employees covered by that law were entitled to five days of paid leave when their spouse gives birth in 2025.
These statutory entitlements enable fathers to take time away from work following the birth of a child and participate in early childcare responsibilities. By recognising fathers’ role in childcare, paternity leave can support a more equitable sharing of family responsibilities and women’s continued participation in employment.
