Middle East Technical University (METU) operates structured mentoring schemes specifically designed to support female undergraduate and graduate students across academic, career, and personal development dimensions. These initiatives combine institutional mentoring frameworks, AI-driven personalized guidance, and peer-to-peer network mentoring to foster female retention, leadership, and professional progression in higher education.
Core Mentoring Frameworks & Initiatives
- The AIMS Project (AI-Driven Mentoring Framework for Female Students): Middle East Technical University (METU), through its Center for Applied Ethics, participates in the Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnership project AIMS (AI-Based Mentoring for Women in STEAM Studies), conducted from November 2025 to October 2028. The project aims to enhance women's access to mentoring and academic development opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), where they frequently face challenges such as a lack of role models, limited mentoring availability, mathematical and digital skill gaps, and self-confidence issues impacting academic progression. To address these barriers, AIMS is developing a specialized AI-based mentoring system designed to deliver individualized academic and socio-emotional support through personalized study planning, competency building, and career guidance. By integrating adaptive learning technologies and responsible AI principles, the project fosters digital literacy, resilience, and gender-sensitive learning pathways to empower women to strengthen their competencies and advance in STEAM education.
- Women in Engineering (WIEN) & Peer Mentoring Schemes: Coordinated by student professional societies (such as IEEE Women in Engineering - WIE METU Branch and Nature & Engineering Society), METU provides structured mentoring connecting female students with experienced female engineers, researchers, and alumni. Mentoring sessions cover career trajectory planning, industry navigation, and academic progression.
