Middle East Technical University (METU) systematically measures and tracks the total volume of water treated and reused across its main campus. Because METU utilizes treated water derived from Lake Eymir and on-campus membrane treatment facilities, the university meets its entire water requirement from treated water resources. This closed-loop water management system is continuously monitored and logged by the Department of Construction and Technical Works (YİTDB) and the Heat and Water Administration Office (İSİM).
1. Measurement Framework & Telemetry Infrastructure
- 100% Treated Water Supply Tracking: METU measures both raw water intake/purification at its Lake Eymir treatment facilities and effluent recycling from Technopolis/lodgment membrane units.
- SCADA & Metered Volumetric Logging: Real-time telemetry, SCADA automation screens, and digital index meters record daily and monthly purified water production (metric tons) against total consumed volumes.
2. Comparative Annual Water Production vs. Consumption Data (2019–2025)
Both annual treated water production and total campus water consumption are rigorously metered and recorded as follows (in metric tons): 37,503 and 23,677 in 2019; 34,949 and 25,037 in 2020; 23,690 and 23,013 in 2021; 40,878 and 27,727 in 2022; 29,806 and 22,620 in 2023; 41,848 and 27,075 in 2024; and 36,086 and 29,899 in 2025, respectively. The annual figures and their comparative trends are illustrated in the graph below.

Note: Water production capacity consistently exceeds total consumption, ensuring that 100% of campus operational water requirements are fulfilled through treated and recycled water sources.
