Middle East Technical University (METU) enforces water-conscious building and renovation standards across its physical infrastructure to minimize overall water consumption. Managed through the Heat and Water Administration Office (İSİM) and the Department of Construction and Technical Works (YİTDB), the university integrates low-flow fixtures, automated sensor technologies, and smart metering across campus facilities.
1. Water-Efficient Building Fixtures & Standards
Low-Flush & Low-Flow Installations: Low-flush toilets and low-flow taps are systematically deployed in high-density campus facilities, including student dormitories, sports centers, and staff housing (lodgments), significantly reducing volumetric discharge per use.
Sensor-Controlled Automation: Automated sensor-operated taps and sensor-controlled urinal flushes are installed in key academic and administrative buildings across campus to eliminate human error and prevent idle water flow.
Technical Maintenance & Adaptive Measures: METU’s Heat and Water Administration Office actively tests and evaluates flow-reduction technologies. For instance, following field tests with flow-reduction washers, technical teams adapted fixture specifications to account for local water mineral (calcareous) content, ensuring long-term operational efficiency and prevention of fixture malfunctions.
2. Smart Monitoring & Leak Detection Infrastructure
Smart Water Metering: Sub-metering and smart water telemetry installed in dormitories and key departmental facilities enable continuous monitoring of volumetric flow, aiding in the instant identification of unexpected losses, pipe leaks, and anomalous high-consumption patterns.
