Middle East Technical University (METU) guarantees universal, free access to clean and safe drinking water for all students, academic and administrative staff, and campus visitors under the institutional principle "Free drinking water is a fundamental right." Led by the university in collaboration with METU alumni and supporters, the strategic "Kaynak ODTÜ" (Source METU) project expands drinking water refilling stations across the campus while advancing a plastic-free, sustainable campus environment.
1. "Kaynak ODTÜ" Project & Free Water Access Infrastructure
- Universal Free Drinking Water Access: METU provides network-connected water purification fountains and refilling stations strategically located across academic departments, student dormitories, administrative units, and outdoor campus areas, ensuring continuous, free-of-charge drinking water access for the entire university community and guests.
- Lake Eymir Water Purification Pipeline: Drinking water supplied through campus stations is sourced directly from Lake Eymir and processed via METU's dedicated high-efficiency treatment facilities, transforming natural lake resources into clean, high-quality potable drinking water.
- Plastic Reduction & Environmental Sustainability: The "Kaynak ODTÜ" initiative actively reduces single-use plastic bottle consumption on campus by encouraging the use of reusable water bottles at free purification points, promoting resource efficiency and circular water stewardship.
