METU has publicly pledged to meet its energy needs from 100% renewable sources and promotes the transition to renewable energy beyond the university.

METU's public pledge

METU's Zero Carbon Policy, published on its sustainability website, states, "METU is committed to taking the necessary steps to minimize its carbon footprint by 2030 and to realizing its goal of having a carbon-free campus life by 2040." The policy commits METU to "installing solar panels in convenient places such as building roofs and parking areas in order to meet the energy needs of the campus by 100% renewable energy sources."

Promoting 100% renewable energy beyond METU

• Through the EU Horizon Europe project UP2030, METU-GÜNAM and the METU Faculty of Architecture support cities, including Istanbul, in planning for climate neutrality.
• Solar PES helps schools in Ankara become positive-energy buildings powered by solar energy.
