In 2025, METU took part in policy making to end poverty in its different dimensions at the national and global levels.
Global: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şiir Kılkış (METU Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Earth System Science) has served as Vice-Chair of IPCC Working Group III (mitigation of climate change) since her election in July 2023. In the Seventh Assessment Cycle, the Working Group assesses mitigation pathways and their links to sustainable development, including poverty eradication; its first Lead Author Meeting was held in Paris on 1–5 December 2025.
Global and national: disaster recovery of affected communities
In the project 'Comparative Study on the Recovery Process and Philosophy of Victims and Affected Areas in Asian Cities and Villages' (2024–2026), funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency, METU's Prof. Dr. Meltem Şenol Balaban works with teams from Japan and Taiwan to compare how national, local and private organisations help disaster-affected communities recover, producing policy findings on recovery and on preventing disaster-induced poverty. Findings were presented at the 6th Asian Conference on Urban Disaster Reduction in Kobe, Japan, on 16–18 May 2025.
National: legal framework for the circular economy
The TÜBİTAK 1001 project 'Improving the Legal Infrastructure for the Transition to the Circular Economy' (August 2023 – February 2025) examined the legal and regulatory changes Türkiye needs for a circular economy.
