In 2025, METU organised programmes that directly improve people's access to basic services: safe drinking water, clean energy, health and safe housing.
Safe drinking water: Kaynak ODTÜ (2025)
In 2025, METU, the METU Development Foundation and AdımODTÜ launched Kaynak ODTÜ: water from Lake Eymir is treated and offered free of charge at water dispensers across the campus, with an initial target of 250 locations. It gives free access to safe drinking water to about 24,000 students and replaces single-use plastic bottles.
Clean energy for schools: Solar PES
METU-GÜNAM coordinates 'Solar PES: Solar Energy Powered Positive Energy Schools', funded under EU grant programme EuropeAid/182996/ID/ACT/TR, with the Ankara Development Agency, the Ankara Provincial Directorate of National Education and METU Development Foundation Schools, to help schools generate their own solar electricity.
Safe housing and disaster preparedness
The METU Disaster Management Implementation and Research Centre trains public institutions, volunteers and the public in disaster preparedness, non-structural risk reduction in homes, damage assessment and local disaster volunteering, helping communities keep safe housing and access to services after disasters.
