11.4.5. Affordable housing for students
Middle East Technical University (METU) systematically evaluates student housing affordability and directly operates an extensive network of subsidized on-campus dormitories and guest houses. Managed under the Health, Culture, and Sports Department (SKS), METU provides high-quality, secure, and affordable accommodation for domestic, international, and exchange students, protecting them from market-driven housing inflation with monthly rates far below private rental averages.

1. Evaluation of Affordability & Subsidized Student Rates
METU evaluates student economic needs to ensure barrier-free higher education access for out-of-town, low-income, and merit-based applicants:
- Subsidized Monthly Dormitory Rates (2026): Rates are strictly regulated and subsidized by the university based on room type and capacity (1, 2, 3, 4, and multi-bedroom configurations across standard point-ranked dormitories and guest houses). Monthly fees range from a minimum of 2,812 TL/month (lowest rate for standard point-ranked dormitories) to a maximum of 6,309 TL/month (highest rate for premium guest house configurations), inclusive of utility fees, 24/7 hot water, high-speed internet, and daily cleaning.
- Prioritized Need-Based & Merit Allocations: METU evaluates priority criteria (financial need, disability status, academic achievement), granting 481 students direct unranked priority dormitory placement (Sıralamasız Yerleşim) without waiting lists.
2. Direct Student Housing Provision & On-Campus Amenities (2025)
METU directly owns and operates 20 student dormitories and guest houses, providing comprehensive residential and social infrastructure:
- Total Bed Capacity: 7,691 Undergraduate Beds (3,678 female, 4,013 male) plus 373 Post-Graduate Beds across dedicated guest houses.
- Standard Room & Facility Amenities: Every room is equipped with a refrigerator, study desks, bookshelves, wardrobes, and shoe racks. Facilities include 24/7 security with CCTV, study halls, architecture drawing rooms, student kitchens, laundromats with washers/dryers/irons, canteens, and bi-weekly bed linen replacements.
3. Empirical Allocation Metrics & Demographics (2025)
New Undergraduate Student Housing Allocations
Out of 1,851 new undergraduate applicants, METU registered and housed 1,375 students across Turkish, International, and Exchange student profiles:

Postgraduate Student Housing Allocations
Out of 257 postgraduate applicants, METU housed 146 master and doctoral students (including 100% of international exchange postgraduates):
- Postgraduate Males: 138 applicants → 67 registered.
- Postgraduate Females: 119 applicants → 79 registered.
International Student Residential Integration
Across the 20 campus dormitories, METU accommodates 685 international students (347 male, 338 female) across facilities such as 4th Dorm, 6th Dorm, Faika Demiray, Isa Demiray, and the Postgraduate Guest House.
