10.6.1. Non-discriminatory admissions policy

METU's admissions policy does not discriminate, and it explains the positive measures it applies for students with disabilities.

Undergraduate admission

Undergraduate admission in Turkiye is centralised: the Measurement, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) places students solely on the basis of national exam scores and their preferences, without regard to ethnicity, religion, gender, disability or income.

Positive discrimination

Within Turkiye's national placement system, METU's undergraduate programmes include places reserved by law for disadvantaged groups. In 2025, alongside 2,970 general places, METU's programmes reserved 65 places for the top graduates of secondary schools so that the best student of every school, including schools in less advantaged areas, has a route into METU even when competing nationally with students from better-resourced schools (ÖSYM, 2025-YKS Higher Education Programmes and Quotas Guide). Once enrolled, students with disabilities receive academic accommodations through the Disability Support Office.

Graduate and international admission

Graduate and international applicants are assessed on published academic criteria only. METU's Graduate School states that "the criteria for applying to any graduate program do not differ for international applicants": Turkish and international applicants alike must meet the ALES (or equivalent), English proficiency and grade requirements. International graduate admission follows the METU Directive for International Student Applications, Admissions and Registrations to Graduate Programs (approved by the Senate on 20 May 2014), under which applicants are evaluated on their grades, exam results and English proficiency.

Institutional commitment

METU's Academic Freedom, Integrity, Inclusiveness and Equality Policy commits the university to "taking affirmative action in the application and acceptance of international students from low and middle low-income countries".
