Launched in 2010, the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is an initiative of Universitas Indonesia. It was designed as a ranking system which measures universities' efforts towards sustainability, in reducing their carbon footprint to combat global climate change.

The ranking is conducted through an online survey regarding the existence of policies related to Green Campus and Sustainability as well as the data to the outcomes of the implementation of such policies.

The criteria is grouped under 5 general headings:

1. Setting and Infrastructure
2. Energy and Climate Change
3. Waste
4. Water
5. Transportation
6. Education and Research

METU participates in the Greenmetric IU Rankings since 2018, and ranked 167th, 151st and 103rd for 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively.
