13.3.2. Climate Action Plan, shared

METU has a Climate Action Plan, developed with its stakeholders and shared with local government and local community groups.

Developing the plan

On 13 June 2025, METU held the Climate Action Plan Co-Design Workshop, coordinated by METU CLIMATE and opened by Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil. Academics, administrative staff, and students, including METU Climate Ambassadors, worked on five themes: energy, transportation and built environment; circular economy, water and waste; natural environment, ecosystems and biodiversity; sustainability education, research and knowledge sharing; and data governance, measurement and transparency. The outputs formed the first draft of METU's Climate Action Plan.

Students were brought into the process through METU Climate Envoys. After a call on 19 May 2025, 220 students applied and 54 from different faculties were appointed; their first task was to take part in the co-design workshop on 13 June 2025. The other applicants joined the METU Climate Volunteers network.

The plan

METU CLIMATE coordinates the plan, which covers reducing the university's greenhouse-gas emissions, increasing its capacity to adapt to climate change, and setting sustainable campus targets. It is being developed with academic and administrative units and stakeholders and is to be shared publicly in 2026.
