14.4.1. Water discharge guidelines and standards

METU applies water-quality standards and guidelines to all water it discharges, to protect ecosystems, wildlife and human health.

Standards

• Ankara campus: discharges to the municipal sewer must meet the Ankara Water and Sewerage Authority's (ASKİ) Regulation on the Discharge of Wastewater into the Sewer Network, which sets limits for pollutants, and ASKİ's Basin Protection Regulation. 

• Erdemli (Mersin) campus of the Institute of Marine Sciences: discharges must meet the Mersin Water and Sewerage Authority's (MESKİ) discharge regulation. 

• Treated water reused for irrigation on campus must meet the national wastewater reuse criteria.

Guidelines

Hazardous chemicals from METU laboratories must not be poured into drains; they are collected separately and disposed of by licensed companies under the national Waste Management Regulation.
