12.2.3. Policy waste disposal - hazardous materials

Middle East Technical University (METU) manages hazardous waste generated by its research laboratories and other relevant units in accordance with applicable national environmental legislation and hazardous waste management requirements. The University's hazardous waste management arrangements include the collection of waste from laboratories, temporary storage in designated waste storage areas, and transfer to authorised waste management companies for appropriate treatment or disposal.

METU introduced its institutional toxic waste regulation in 2018 to support the management of hazardous waste generated across the University. Temporary waste storage areas are used to hold laboratory waste before collection by authorised service providers. Units can select waste management companies according to their specific waste types and disposal requirements. Where disposal costs present a significant financial burden, units may seek support from the University's Laboratory Waste Commission.

These arrangements provide an institutional process for managing hazardous laboratory waste and help ensure that its handling, storage, collection, and disposal are conducted in accordance with applicable environmental requirements.
