16.2.2. Students’ union
Middle East Technical University (METU) recognises and supports student representation through its Council of Student Representatives (CSR / ÖTK), which enables students to communicate their needs and expectations to university management and contribute to educational decision-making processes. In addition to this representative function, METU supports students through a variety of academic, professional, cultural, artistic, and sporting activities organised by student clubs, societies, and the Council. Collectively, these mechanisms demonstrate METU’s commitment to promoting student participation in university governance, providing student support, and encouraging engagement in social activities.
Aim
Article 1 of the Directive for the Council of Student Representatives (CSR / ÖTK) at Middle East Technical University (METU) sets out the following objectives:
a) To contribute to the improvement of the academic, social, and cultural opportunities offered to students in line with METU’s Mission Statement.
b) To establish effective communication between the University’s administrative bodies and students, convey students’ expectations and demands to university management, and enable student participation in educational decisions.
c) To contribute to the development of students as individuals with a sense of social responsibility and an understanding of democratic governance principles.
d) To regulate the establishment and functioning of the University’s Council of Student Representatives (CSR / ÖTK).
Scope and Basis
Article 2 states that the Directive applies to associate degree, undergraduate, and graduate students.
The Directive is based on the Higher Education Student Council and National Student Council regulations published in the Official Gazette No. 25942 on 20 September 2005.
Student Representation and Governance Input
METU’s Council of Student Representatives provides a formal framework for conveying students’ expectations and demands to the University’s administrative bodies and supporting student participation in educational decisions. The Directive emphasises communication between students and university management and promotes democratic governance.
Student Support and Social Activities
METU hosts student clubs and societies in cultural, artistic, and sporting fields. These clubs organise and participate in activities within their respective areas and contribute to academic, social, and cultural life on campus.
Examples of events held within the METU student community include Blockchain Days, CESummit’25 (Civil Engineering Summit), the WIEN Panel, the 5th METU IFT Career Days, Engineering Development Day, and the LODOS Community General Education Session. In addition, a talk on Financial Globalisation and Monetary Policy was organised by the METU Council.
These activities illustrate the range of academic, professional, cultural, and social engagement opportunities available to students at METU.
