17.2.2. Cross sectoral dialogue about SDGs

Middle East Technical University (METU) actively initiates and participates in cross-sectoral dialogues regarding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a leading research institution in Türkiye, METU acts as a core bridge connecting academia, national ministries, local municipalities, international bodies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Key initiatives, workshops, and platforms demonstrating METU's role in driving cross-sectoral SDG dialogues include:

1. The METU Climate Action Plan Co-Design Workshop

In June 2025, METU organized the Climate Action Plan Co-Design Workshop hosted under the leadership of the METU Center for Climate Change and Sustainable Development (METU CLIMATE).

Cross-Sectoral Engagement: The workshop functioned as a multi-stakeholder dialogue platform bringing together academic researchers, administrative leaders, municipal representatives, civil society groups, and student initiative leaders.

Core Dialogue Themes: Discussions focused on five key strategic focus areas to align university policy with national and local sustainability targets:

  1. Energy, Transportation, and the Built Environment
  2. Circular Economy, Water, and Waste Management
  3. Natural Environment, Ecosystems, and Biodiversity
  4. Sustainability Education, Research, and Knowledge Sharing
  5. Data Governance, Metrics, and Transparency

2. Multi-Stakeholder Research Centers Driving Policy & NGO Collaboration

METU hosts specialized interdisciplinary research centers that directly engage government bodies and civil society on specific SDGs:

METU CLIMATE & Institute of Marine Sciences (SDG 14: Life Below Water, SDG 13: Climate Action):

Collaborates directly with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change and regional Mediterranean/Black Sea environmental NGOs.

Translates marine observational science and mucilage research into actionable environmental policies and blue-economy strategies through joint stakeholder briefings and policy forums.

METU-GÜNAM (Center for Solar Energy Research) & RÜZGEM (Center for Wind Energy Research) (SDG 7: Affordable & Clean Energy, SDG 9: Industry & Infrastructure):

Frequently convenes forums and policy discussions involving the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, private energy sector partners, and clean-tech NGOs.

Provides technical roadmaps and advisory input for Türkiye's national renewable energy integration and net-zero commitments.

3. Public-Facing Knowledge Sharing: "Sustainable Development Talks" Series

(Focus: SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 13, SDG 14)

To bridge the gap between academic research, public policy, and civil advocacy, METU CLIMATE (in collaboration with METU-GISAM) produced the "Sustainable Development Talks" platform.

The series features expert faculty delivering actionable insights on topics critical to civil society and policymakers, including:

Sponge Cities & Climate-Resilient Urban Planning (SDG 9 & 11) in collaboration with disaster management experts.

Socio-Economic Impacts of Climate Inequality (SDG 1 & 10) evaluating transition economics.

Water Scarcity & Circular Economy (SDG 6) addressing agricultural practices and industrial water reuse.

4. Youth Empowerment & Student-Led Civic Engagement: METU Climate Ambassadors

(Focus: SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals)

Launched in mid-2025, the METU Climate Ambassadors Initiative acts as an interface between the student body, university governance, local NGOs, and municipal youth assemblies. It equips students to run grassroots sustainability projects on campus and represent METU in wider regional climate networks and NGO summits.
