15.4.1. Water discharge guidelines and standards

METU applies water-quality standards and guidelines to all water it discharges, to protect land and freshwater ecosystems, wildlife and human health.

Standards

  • Wastewater from the Ankara campus is discharged to the municipal sewer under the Ankara Water and Sewerage Authority's (ASKİ) Regulation on the Discharge of Wastewater into the Sewer Network, and the Eymir–Mogan basin is protected under ASKİ's Basin Protection Regulation.
  • The Institute of Marine Sciences campus in Erdemli follows the Mersin Water and Sewerage Authority's (MESKİ) discharge regulation.
  • Treated wastewater reused for irrigation on campus must meet national reuse criteria.

Guidelines

METU's Zero Waste Management System Procedures and Principles, which apply to all METU units and to all waste types covered by the national Waste Management Regulation, state that "units generating hazardous waste are responsible for collecting and storing it separately under conditions that comply with the legislation, and for its disposal by delivery to licensed companies"; delivery receipts showing the quantity and date are reported to the university's Zero Waste Unit.

Laboratory rules apply this at bench level. The METU Institute of Marine Sciences' Laboratory Safety Rules and Guidelines state: "Chemical waste must be disposed of following the guidelines provided by the laboratory supervisor and in accordance with regulations. Under no circumstances should chemicals be disposed of in sinks or other inappropriate areas."
